Since the last increase in the Ecuadorian patent official fees, enacted in 2014, the number of patent applications filed in Ecuador decreased drastically. In addition, a number of social organizations and some foreign entities brought legal actions against such an increase. The claims mainly argued that the approved official fees were higher than those of other Andean Member countries, they were not justified considering the cost of patent services rendered in Ecuador, and that the discounts granted to some national entities were discriminatory to foreign applicants.
